PlayStation 3 sells 88,400 units

By admin | November 11, 2006

Enterbrain reported PlayStation 3 launch sales figures today. 88,400 units were sold, with the 60GB model comprising a majority of sales. 54,600 units were of the 60GB model and 33,800 units of the 20GB model were sold. This compares favorably against the Xbox360 last year, which launched to lackluster sales of 62,135 units.

Ridge Racer 7 and Gundam virtually tied in sales, both selling 30,000 units with Ridge Racer 7 only 300 units ahead. Resistance came in third with 15,700 units. No figures were given for Sega’s golf title or Genji: Kamui Souran. Ridge Racer 7 only marginally performed better than last year’s Ridge Racer 6 for Xbox 360, which sold 29,891 copies.

More systems were sold than games, owing to the PlayStation 3’s high resale value on Japanese auction websites and extra features such as Blu-Ray movie playback, backwards compatibility and the PlayStation Store network. It’ll be interesting to see if the attach rate becomes better over the holidays, as the release list, compared to the DS, Wii and PS2, is rather small and with few titles that appeal to the traditional Japanese gamer. It also depends on Sony’s ability to quickly restock PlayStation 3 systems to satisfy demand, a task which may take months, if not a year. The DS, much easier to produce, is fast approaching the one year mark for shortages in Japan which began after last years holiday.
