The Scientists’ Games of the Year 2003

DCharlie’s choice:
kotor
Knights of the Old Republic
It’s difficult to find something to say that hasn’t been said about KotOR already. KotOR single-handedly resurrected any interest in the Star Wars series for this particular player, as well as telling a more compelling story than those found in the new films, and introducing a new star into the Star Wars realm in the form of HK-47, taking a more sinister and psychotic angle to humour. Atmosphere-wise, the game has the Star Wars style blasters and lightsabers that fans of the series know and love, but one of the great attractions is the ability to use Jedi powers for good… or evil. The game itself has a couple of
twists, and remains interesting from start to finish, giving the player the implicit choice of which side of the force to bat for.

Jonnyram’s choice:
ffta
Drag-on Dragoon (Drakengard)
While this game suffers from a number of fundamental game design flaws, its story and atmosphere totally outweigh anything negative. For that alone, this game deserves recognition. On the negative side, the battles can be repetitive, and with a camera / target system that is counter-productive, sometimes frustrating. But with that complaint out of the way, we can see a magnificent game: multiple endings that don’t require entire replays to unlock, cutting-edge music, overwhelmingly large battles, a good challenge, and possibly the darkest, most depressing story you will witness in your gaming lifetime. The story alone is not to be missed! If you can live with the control gripes, you will fall in love with this game - a deep, dark, strange kind of love.

LEOsh’s choice:

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Although not very difficult, there is something about this game which provides entertainment for a long period of time. It is simple and straightforward, and can be enjoyed by different age groups and game skills. For the hardcore gamers, the challenge would be to perfect the different jobs and skills plus completing the 300 quests available. The cute graphics only make the game even better. A
definite keeper.
