CR thoughts on the name Nintendo Wii
By admin | August 18, 2010
The following is what we here at Codename Revolution think of the name Nintendo Wii.
1. In English it’s meant to be “We”. In French it could mean “oui” (pronounced We) which means “Yes” but it seems that Nintendo may not have a language issue since its easy to pronounce except when it comes to slang in English.
2. Nintendo announced the name at the right time. If this name was announced at E3 its possible that some really hardcore Nintendo gamers would walk out of the press briefing. Ok maybe its seems like an exaggeation but it would be a complete dissapointment to many as we can see it happening alraedy. Let the backlash happen now so that people understand they are serious and get a bit used to it.
3. The online service Nintendo is offering for Nintendo Wii should be renamed from Nintendo “WiFi” Connection not to cause any confusion as Wii is meant to be pronounced as “We”. Unless they just keep it as plain as Nintendo WFC.
4. We can obviously see how Nintendo dares to be different not only with the console and controller but even with the name.
5. The Revolution name although loved by Nintendo gamers could have given non-gamers a different impression. The word Revolution is usually often remembered as something that promotes socialism or communism although there was the American Revolution, if anyone spoke of a second American Revolution in this day an age you can only imagine at this point. The name has the image of “revolting” or “rebellion” or something violent. At the same time many gamers had begun to shorten the name to Rev or Revo.
6. The name doesn’t sound like a Video Game system; it’s there to attract non-gamers.
7. If Wii doesn’t work out as the Playstation name did, gamers will end up calling it a “Nintendo”, as it was back in the NES and SNES days.
8. The name should be pronounced as “Why?” instead of “We”. It just sounds more cooler this way and a bit catchy. Because of the way its spelled, many non-gamers may end up pronouncing it as Why, at least in the West.
9. Wii might be alot easier to market with. If people begin to pronounce it as “Why” something catchy such as “Wii is better then X” could work out (Y is after X, X for Xbox). Of course the two “i’s” represent the controller so many things can be done. The letter “i” is becoming common such as “iPod”.
10. Since everyone speaks of “PS3″ or “360″ it seems that Nintendo is doing the same with three letters with “Wii”.
It seems Nintendo has given us confirmation that we will get two controllers with the purchase of a Revolution with the announcement.
