Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
By admin | August 26, 2010
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence is the special edition of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and it improves upon various aspects of that game and adds a significant amount of new content to it. Subsistence adds a really fun multiplayer mode and also includes ports of the original Metal Gear games.
For the most part Subsistence is the same as Snake Eater. It has the same phenomenal story and gameplay mechanics that made Snake Eater great. One new addition to the game is the new camera mode, which lets you rotate the camera around Snake using the right analog stick as well as center it behind you with a simple button press. This new camera mode is really helpful and truly improves the overall experience of the game and if, for some reason, you don’t like it you can easily switch back to the old camera.

Probably the most significant addition Subsistence makes is the new Metal Gear Online mode. The online modes all support up to 8 players at a time. The game mechanics in all of the modes are quite similar to that of the single player game. You run around in third person mode but must stop and go to first person view to shoot, this can take a bit of getting used to if you are used to other online shooters but its still just as fun. Other mechanics such as putting your back to a wall, hiding in a cardboard box, and the camouflage system are also in effect online. The five online modes are deathwatch, team deathmatch, sneaking mission, rescue mission, and capture mission. Deathmatch and team deathmatch are what you would expect. Sneaking mission puts one person as snake and has them try to retrieve a microfilm and reach an exit before the rest of the players eliminate him. The goal in capture mission is for the opposing teams to battle to keep the frog doll in their base for as long as possible. Rescue mission is basically one flag capture-the-flag except instead of a flag you have a rubber duck. All in all the online modes are all fast paced and entertaining and the online alone is probably worth the price of the game for most people.
Subsistence also contains the two original Metal Gear games, translated into English. This is a great addition for hardcore fans of the series that may not have got to play these games and are worth at least a try even if you aren’t a huge fan of the series. Subsistence also has a theatre mode in which you can view any of the game cutscences in any order as well as a “Secret Theatre” which contains a bunch of hilarious parody videos. There is also a duel mode which lets you play against any of the bosses in the game and get scored on your performance. Subsistence also contains a few new levels for the Snake vs. Monkey mini game from Snake Eater.

Even though MGS 3 is a few years old now the graphics are still some of the best on the ps2. The environments for the game are incredible and the character models are excellent. The sound of Subsistence is also superb as it was in Snake Eater.
Overall, if you don’t own Snake Eater, Subsistence is a great chance to pick the game up plus a whole lot more. Even if you do have Snake Eater, Subsistence has enough new content, specifically the online modes, the warrant the purchase.
