Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland

Like many other gamers, I’ve been a fan of the Tony Hawk series since playing the demo on PlayStation . The series has been a huge success over the last five years, with each game release including new gameplay elements and improved graphics. Neversoft hopes to continue this success by releasing the next game in the series, American Wasteland, in Fall 2005. The game will be released on Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 and Game cube. In addition, a Nintendo DS version is being developed by Vicarious Visions.
The most interesting gameplay change in American Wasteland is the “no levels, no load time” factor. Following the trend led by the Grand Theft Auto series, American Wasteland will allow gamers the freedom to skate or bike throughout a huge open environment. In fact, Neversoft has re-created the vast urban terrain of Los Angeles for American Wasteland- including Hollywood, East L.A., and other landmark areas.

The game will feature dozens of shops, that will allow for even more customization than the previous Tony Hawk games offered. The stores will include skate shops, barbershops, tattoo parlors, and clothing stores. To afford your purchases, you must accomplish goals and earn cash in American Wasteland.
As another interesting gameplay addition, American Wasteland will allow the player to ride BMX bikes throughout the entire game. A lot of focus has been placed on this new gameplay area, with a BMX-specific control scheme, all-new physics, and BMX-specific goals. I’ve always been more of a skateboard fan, but it will be fun to switch to BMX bikes when I get sick of skateboarding.

American Wasteland will feature classic, multiplayer and online gameplay modes. The classic mode will allow gamers to skip the storyline, and dozens of THPS game levels will be brought back, with updated graphics. The offline multiplayer modes will include new co-op modes, which will allow players to complete goals together. The game’s online mode will be available on PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Xbox 360.
Overall, THAW simply looks amazing. The gameplay additions, such as the expanded environment, BMX mode, new board tricks, customization, and gameplay modes will make this series more enjoyable than ever. Gamers will truly be in for a treat when this game is released on October- Neversoft has actually found ways to improve an already-amazing series.
