Sonic Rush

By admin | August 31, 2010

sonic-rushIf you were a Game Gear owner, you will likely agree- there is something a bit nostalgic about playing a portable Sonic game. Whether you have memories of playing the Sonic games for Game Gear on those long family road trips, or over lunch break at school, there is one thing for certain- they were a good way to kill time. Finally, Sega has decided to finally bring the series back to a portable (I think there was also one Sonic game released on Neo Geo Pocket a few years ago).

Sonic Rush introduces a lot of new concepts to the series. First of all, you are paired up with a new female character- Blaze the Cat. Where are Tails and Knuckles in this game? I’m not sure, but it is likely they will make an appearance somewhere in the game’s plot. Sega has also announced that there is a new arch nemesis for Sonic to face, who is even more evil than Dr. Eggman (Robotinic). In addition, Sonic and Blaze appear to have completely different storylines and outcomes in their games, which should give the title a lot more replay value.

Gameplay in Sonic Rush appears to be a mixture of 2D and 3D action. If you haven’t already, check out the trailer on the official website (link above). After watching it, I’m even more excited- it looks like Sega is adding a lot of new gameplay elements, some which take advantage of the DS dual screens. The trailer begins by showing the 2D elements of the game, which look very similar to old Sonic games- except for the fact that you now have 2 screens. As your latitude changes in the levels, Sonic actually moves to the top or bottom of the screen. Sonic levels have always been designed very tall, usually with multiple routes above and below. The DS dual screens work out perfectly for this.

Later in the trailer, we see Sonic running on top of a platform, battling a boss. This battle is completely in 3D, and looks very smooth. Sega has not confirmed which elements of the game will be 3D, and which will not, but I am guessing that most boss battles and bonus levels will be in 3D, while all of the level gameplay will be in 2D.

Sega has also confirmed that the game will feature many mini-games, which players will be able to unlock throughout the game. Mini games are always welcome, especially on a portable system. This feature, paired with the alternate character storyline and outcome, give me the impression that this Sonic will be very high in replay value. It’s still too early to make a good prediction, as I’m basing my judgements primarily on trailer clips and hype. All in all, Sonic Rush looks very promising, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it!
