Hidden Treasures- Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness
By admin | September 1, 2010
One day, I was wandering through the mall and something caught my eye. It was beautiful and I had to have it. Then I looked behind the blonde cashier and saw something far more interesting and most assuredly more intelligent. It was Legacy of Darkness for the Nintendo 64. I asked the cashier if I could try the game out and she hooked it up to the screen. After an hour or so, she figured out where the controller went and the game was good to go. The look of the fog and the detail of the characters instantly captured my attention.
I was hesitant to purchase Legacy of Darkness due to the criticism it received by IGN and other websites. I didn’t care what anyone thought- I knew there was more to this game than the critics would want you to see. Besides, I knew IGN was full of crap when they predicted that the Dreamcast was the next big thing. After a long laugh at IGN’s expense, I purchased the game and headed home. The ride home was terrible. Partly because I had a new game I wanted to play but mostly because it was 1999 and the only thing on the radio was Limp Bizkit and Creed.
Finally, I had arrived home after hearing the Phrase “Can you Take me Higher?” five hundred and eighty seven times. Luckily, the song was only on the air once during the ride. I quickly ran downstairs to play the game. I slowly inserted the cartridge as if a giant stone ball was going to fall from the sky and force me to run for my life. Actually I was half right. My little brother popped out of the closet waiting for me to play a game that he could “narc” on me for having. One well-placed punch and a wedgie later, he was back upstairs and out of my way.
I then turned on the Nintendo 64 and the stereo equipment. wOW!! The game looks a lot better when you play it on a TV that doesn’t have a dark red cast over the screen that is required at all second-hand game stores. The sound was loud and realistic. The game created a dark and eerie atmosphere that was instantly enjoyable. I loved the fact that when you threw the axe, there was a lightning strike that created an explosion so loud you would swear there was a thunder storm moving in. The violence was also very pleasing.
The game was commonly criticized for its controls and the fact that it was a remake of a previous game from the last holiday season. Honestly, I had very little trouble with the controls. They were strange at first, but things became easier after playing the game for a while. If you are like most “real” gamers you can overlook the game’s small flaws see the whole picture. If you give this game a try, you just might have some fun.
